Poor Sleep May Significantly Raise High Blood Pressure Risk

Getting less than the recommended 7-8 hours of sleep each night could significantly increase the risk of developing high blood pressure, a recent study has found. Other insomnia-related symptoms, like trouble falling or staying asleep, were also linked to a greater likelihood of high blood pressure.

This research comes as both insomnia and hypertension (high blood pressure) become increasingly common in the U.S. About 30% of Americans experience symptoms of insomnia– and about 35% don’t get enough sleep– while around 42-45% live with high blood pressure.

The study involved over 66,000 female participants aged 25-42 without hypertension at baseline. Sleep duration, sleeping difficulties, and health data were tracked over a period of 16 years with the results showing that both lack of sleep and poor quality sleep were associated with a greater risk of hypertension.

"I hope these findings further underscore the crucial role of quality sleep in our overall well-being,” said Shahab Haghayegh, PhD, a research fellow. “The American Academy of Sleep Medicine recommends sleeping seven or more hours a night, and if you cannot fall or stay asleep, it might be worth exploring why that is.”

Micronutrients May Help Treat, Prevent Neurological Diseases

Getting an adequate amount of micronutrients– the vitamins and minerals the human body needs to function properly– could play a role in managing or avoiding certain neurological disorders, according to a recent research review.

The review looked at a wide body of research on neurological diseases and water- or fat-soluble vitamins, macrominerals, and trace minerals. From their analysis, the researchers believe that vitamins A, B, C, D, and E and folic acid, selenium, and zinc could particularly help with symptom management in Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease.

The authors also pointed out that some existing research shows that vitamin B12 could help stop tau tangles forming in the brain, which is currently a commonly accepted cause of Alzheimer’s disease.

Despite this promising information, experts caution that much more research is needed in this area and that increasing micronutrient intake alone will not treat or prevent neurological diseases. However, there may be a case for emphasizing diets naturally rich in micronutrients alongside regular exercise as one way to help protect neurological health. Stop Seasoning Your Food With Plastic

Did you know that salt, even “healthy” sea salt, is a source of plastic in most people’s diet?

As you may be aware, table salt goes through a chemical-laden process before it gets to your home. It gets stripped of all its valuable minerals before anti-caking chemicals are added, making it far from pure. That’s why many people have turned to sea salt instead BUT studies have found that even sea salt is often loaded with potentially harmful microplastics, likely due to the 8 million tons of plastic garbage dumped in the ocean each year. That’s why Ava Jane’s Kitchen went on a search for plastic-free salt and found it in their outstanding Colima Sea Salt. Sourced from Colima, Mexico– one of the only uncontaminated sources of natural mineral salt in the world– this sea salt is rich in natural minerals, incredibly flavorful, and (most importantly) lab-tested to be free of microplastics.

3 Health Benefits of Apple Cider Vinegar, According to Research

Apple cider vinegar (ACV) has long been an incredibly popular home remedy but research documenting its health benefits is lacking. The studies that have been conducted so far show that a tablespoon or two of ACV could help moderately lower blood sugar after meals, and it may also benefit cholesterol levels and weight loss efforts. Anecdotally, ACV may help with acid reflux when diluted in water and could make your hair shinier when used as a hair rinse. (More)

Fruit + Whole Grains Can Help You Avoid Midlife Weight Gain

Gaining weight when you hit the “middle-age” part of your life is very common. There are, of course, a variety of factors that can be involved in this, but researchers believe that eating a lot of poor-quality carbohydrates (i.e., refined carbs) usually plays a big role in promoting weight gain. For this reason, swapping out refined carbs for whole grains, fruit, and non-starchy veggies appears to be very effective at combating midlife weight gain– and possibly weight gain in general. Short-Term Exposure to Air Pollution Linked to Increased Stroke Risk

Many studies have now documented the health risks of long-term exposure to air pollution but the effects of short-term or acute exposure are less clear. According to some new research, one harmful effect appears to be an increased risk of stroke. Overall, researchers found that exposure to higher concentrations of nitrogen dioxide were linked to a 28% increased risk of stroke within 5 days, and PM2.5 (tiny, inhalable particles) was linked to a 15% increased risk. ‘Brain Training’ May Help Reduce Chronic Back Pain

Back pain is one of the most common types of chronic pain, affecting millions of people around the world. A new study has found that a unique technique known as pain reprocessing therapy (PRT)– which involves training the brain to perceive pain signals as less threatening– could reduce back pain intensity. These findings correspond with another recent study where PRT helped people with chronic back pain find “substantial and durable pain relief.” (More)

The Right Omega-6 / Omega-3 Ratio Could Lower Inflammation

Omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids are both needed by your body for good health. However, some research indicates that when the balance of these two is off, inflammation can increase in the body, possibly triggering autoimmune reactions. The ideal omega-6/3 ratio is thought to be around 1:1 or 4:1, but the standard Western diet usually ends up closer to a 16:1 or 20:1 ratio. Fatty fish, seaweed, seeds, and nuts are all great sources of omega-3, while much omega-6 in the modern diet comes from oils like soybean and corn– present in many processed foods. (More)
